All About Painting Rocks

About

Painting Rocks: Form, Value & Colour Rocks are a perfect subject for learning how to simplify complex natural forms and understand the relationship between shape, value, light, and colour. In this series, we’ll explore several different approaches to painting rocks, from building form through grisaille and value studies to working over coloured grounds and layering transparent glazes. Along the way, we’ll focus on how to break complicated rock formations into simple masses, use value changes to turn form, and combine direct painting with glazing techniques to create convincing colour, atmosphere, and depth. Rather than learning a single formula for painting rocks, the goal is to develop a set of skills you can carry into landscape painting as a whole.
